P2P vs OTC

P2P vs OTC Crypto Trading in Nigeria: What’s the Difference?

P2P and OTC are two terms that come up often when Nigerians talk about converting crypto to naira. They can look similar from the outside because both involve one party buying crypto from another, but the experience is quite different.

On a P2P marketplace, you usually choose from a list of advertisers and open an order through a platform. With OTC, you deal directly with a trading desk or counterparty, agree on the rate, send the asset and receive your settlement.

Neither method is automatically better for every trader. The useful question is which one fits the way you trade.

What is P2P crypto trading?

P2P means peer-to-peer. A P2P marketplace connects individual buyers and sellers and gives them a structure for completing the trade. You might see several advertisers offering different prices, limits, payment methods and completion histories.

You choose an offer, open the order, follow the marketplace instructions and complete the transaction within the platform's process.

The marketplace usually provides order tracking and dispute tools, but you are still choosing the counterparty yourself.

What is OTC crypto trading?

OTC means over-the-counter. Instead of browsing a public order book or a list of P2P advertisements, you speak directly to a trading desk and request a quote for the asset and amount you want to trade.

Once the rate is agreed, the desk provides the wallet details, you send the crypto, and the trade is settled according to the agreed terms.

For a Nigerian crypto trader, OTC can be as simple as having the entire conversation on WhatsApp with a known trading desk.

The biggest difference: marketplace versus direct desk

The simplest way to understand it is this:

  • P2P: you enter a marketplace and choose another trader.
  • OTC: you already know the desk you are trading with and ask that desk for a quote.

That difference changes how you compare rates, how many steps you handle yourself and what the relationship looks like if you trade regularly.

How rates work on P2P

On a P2P marketplace, there is rarely one single rate. Different advertisers can post different prices at the same time. One advertiser may offer a better headline price but have a smaller order limit. Another may have a slightly different rate but handle larger trades.

So the first number you see is not always the only thing that matters. You also need to look at limits, payment method, completion history and the exact terms attached to the advertisement.

How rates work with an OTC desk

An OTC desk normally gives you one quote for the trade you want to make. A fair desk should still benchmark that quote against the broader market rather than simply choosing a number.

At De'Exchange, our website publishes indicative crypto rates and the trading desk confirms the live rate before you send. That gives you a reference without making you search through a list of individual advertisers.

Which is simpler for a first-time trader?

That depends on what makes you comfortable. P2P gives you a platform interface and multiple traders to choose from. OTC gives you one direct conversation.

If you like comparing offers yourself and following a marketplace order flow, P2P may feel familiar. If you would rather explain what you want to trade and receive one confirmed quote, OTC may feel simpler.

What about trade size?

P2P listings often have minimum and maximum order limits. That can work perfectly well for many everyday trades, but larger amounts sometimes require splitting a transaction across several offers or finding an advertiser with enough capacity.

OTC desks are often used by traders, resellers and businesses who want to discuss a larger amount directly rather than matching several public ads. The exact rate can still depend on liquidity and the size of the trade, so confirm before sending.

Which method gives the better rate?

There is no honest answer that says one side always wins. P2P advertisers compete with one another, so you may find attractive rates. OTC desks can also offer competitive rates because they price from the same underlying crypto market and liquidity conditions.

What matters is the amount you actually receive after considering the full trade, not just the biggest number in a list. Always compare the confirmed payout, not an advertisement you have not opened yet.

How does settlement differ?

With P2P, settlement follows the marketplace workflow. You open the order, payment is made according to the agreed method, and crypto is released or received within the order.

With OTC, the desk confirms its process directly with you. For a crypto-to-naira trade, that usually means you send the crypto to the confirmed wallet and receive naira once the required confirmation has been seen.

What about safety?

Both methods require attention. On P2P, review the advertiser, stay inside the official order process and do not release crypto because of a screenshot alone. With OTC, verify that you are speaking to the real desk, confirm the wallet and rate, and do not send based on an old conversation or unverified contact.

Whichever route you choose, blockchain transfers are not something to rush. Confirm the address and network before you tap send.

P2P or OTC: which one fits you?

P2P may suit you if:

  • You want to browse several public offers.
  • You are comfortable managing marketplace orders yourself.
  • You want to choose counterparties one trade at a time.

OTC may suit you if:

  • You prefer dealing with one known trading desk.
  • You trade regularly and want a repeatable process.
  • You want to discuss larger or more specific trades directly.
  • You would rather confirm one rate than browse several advertisements.

Can you cash out crypto without using P2P?

Yes. That is exactly where direct OTC trading comes in. If you already have Bitcoin, USDT, Ethereum, Solana or another supported asset, you can request a direct crypto-to-naira quote without opening a P2P marketplace order.

The practical takeaway

P2P gives you a marketplace. OTC gives you a direct desk. Both can be useful, and both still require you to confirm the rate, network, wallet details and expected settlement before sending crypto.
